Gene Obie VIEW PROFILE

Gene Obie

MEDFORD- Gene Obie, a resident of Eagle Point, passed away suddenly July 1, 2022 while at work. He was born in Great Falls, Montana to Willard and Marlene Obie. He became an Oregonian in 1967 when the family relocated. He graduated from Medford Senior High in 1979 and went on to attend Southern Oregon State College (now SOU) where he received a degree in Humanities in 1987.

He is survived by his wife, Wendy (Haakinson) Obie; his son, Brady Obie - both of Eagle Point. Gene and Wendy were married on July 23, 1988 in San Jose, CA. He is also survived by his mother, Marlene Obie; sister, Lana Obie; brother, Tim Obie; and niece Meredith Obie - all of Bothell, WA. His father, Willard, died in 2007.

Gene loved working at Southern Oregon Credit Services for nearly 29 years. It could be said this was one of his favorite places and he never did see himself as retired. He set the standard for excellence there and was their first Employee of the Year and subsequently, Collector of the Year the next. He will be missed.

Gene was an active member at his church and within the Oregon ELCA Synod and served on numerous boards and councils. Ascension Lutheran Church was his home away from home and he leaves a legacy there by being instrumental in settting up their Mission Endowment Fund.

A lover of many kinds of music, he listened to and performed with piano or tuba from elementary school through college bands and orchestras. He also enjoyed singing in choirs in college and church. Gene loved stupid puns, Americana music, was a 49ers and Standford Cardinal fan. He enjoyed playing Fantasy Football and watching the football games. Gene was known for his smile and laugh along with his easy-going cheerfulness and optimism. His passing leaves a giant hole in so many lives and he will be sorely missed by all that knew and loved him.

A super nice guy. I have told him several times, I thought he was the best tuba player Medford High ever produced. Dennis Resch says so.
